I went from zero to $1M in under 12 months. Over the next six years I did about $115M more.
The framework behind it is not a secret, and I still use it today. It is a pyramid with four pillars: mindset, skill sets, offer and traffic. Sales sits on top.
Here is how each one works and how to build a seven figure business inside a year with it.
Pillar 1: Mindset, decided in advance
I used to think mindset was a joke. I just forced myself through the work I did not want to do: messaging people, taking calls, prospecting and posting.
Then I spent time with a mentor of mine, Steve. He earns at a nine figure level and charges about $200,000 per client per year.
One day, during a FaceTime call, an inmate threw a rock at Steve’s roughly half million dollar car. Steve did not explode. He apologized, then went inside the prison to spend time with the man.
The lesson is that you decide ahead of time how you will act. Your habitual thoughts drive your actions, and your actions drive your results.
Here is the technique I use:
- Write a document describing who you want to become. “I am impeccable with my word.” “I do not take things personally.” “I focus on others.”
- If you do not know where to start, list everything you dislike about yourself, like impatient or out of shape, and write the opposite.
- Read it every morning so those thoughts show up when things get hard.
Watch who you spend time with and what you consume. It all shapes how you think.
Pillar 2: Skill sets you already have
Audit your skills. Mine included basketball, Division I football, testing well and fitness. That could have become ACT prep, athletic coaching or what it did become, fitness coaching.
Ask yourself:
- What have I achieved in the last five years?
- What comes easily to me that is hard for others?
- What do people ask me for advice about?
- What problems have I solved or challenges have I overcome?
- What could I talk about all day?
- What would people pay to learn from me?
Teach something you actually know. Being a commodity does not matter as much as you think. In business, marketing beats being the best coach, because people cannot buy from you if they do not know you exist.
My clients teach all sorts of things. One helps people get green cards with a defined process. Others teach Airbnb arbitrage, day trading and permanent makeup.
If you need a skill, Alison has free courses and Udemy has cheap ones. I learned Facebook ads on Udemy for about $100.
Pillar 3: An offer you have actually graded
Every offer falls into wealth, health or relationships. People buy to get more of one of those.
Your offer needs to address a pain point, use a system that creates a unique selling proposition, and solve a burning issue.
Then grade it on four factors: how valuable the outcome is, how risky it is, how long it takes and how much effort it requires. Here is how some real offers score:
- Day trading. Strong outcome, high risk, fast, low effort. Three of four positives. Strong offer.
- Green cards. Huge outcome and minimal risk, but long and effortful. People accept that because the outcome is so valuable.
- Fitness trainers. Losing 20 pounds in three months is risky, slow and hard. Weak offer in a big market.
- Liposuction. Immediate, no risk, no effort. People pay $5,000 to $10,000.
- Permanent makeup training. Good outcome and fast, maybe $10K in 30 days, but risky and effortful. Two of four.
The better your offer, the easier everything else gets.
Validate before you build
Sell the offer first. Run one on one Zoom calls with your first buyers and record them, because what they need is often different from what you expect. After a few clients, build the curriculum and member portal around what they actually needed.
Spending two or three months on a portal with zero sales can kill a business. I almost quit five times in my first two years. I estimate quitting would have cost me about $114M.
Pillar 4: Traffic you can count on
Gurus say go viral. I rarely go viral, and only about 2% of creators pass 100,000 followers. It is not consistent enough to build on.
There are three routes: warm organic, cold organic and paid.
Warm first. Message people who commented on or engaged with your posts. About 20 an hour and 100 a day avoids spam blocks. Expect around 30% response, five calls and at least one sale. On a $2,000 offer, that is about $200 an hour.
Cold next. Find your ideal customers in Facebook groups or Instagram hashtags. Same volume, about 10% response, roughly three calls and maybe one close.
If you have no sales and no cash, you have a messaging and sales skill gap. Fix it with a mentor, a course or a sales job.
Use VAs to scale outreach. You can hire a VA for about $3 an hour. Four VAs working six hours each send about 720 messages a day, roughly 7,200 a month. At 10% response, 5% booking and 30% close, that is about nine sales.
Then boosted posts. Pay for profile views on Instagram. Aim for $0.10 to $0.20 per view and $1 to $2 per follower. One physical therapy cash practice client with a $7,000 offer, 2,000 followers and $200K to $300K in debt spent about $2,000 over 30 days. They gained about 1,000 followers, booked about 21 calls, closed six or seven and made about $49,000 that month. That is not typical, but it shows what the boosted funnel can do.
Then DM and click to page ads. For B2C, expect about $10 a lead, so $1,000 gets roughly 100 leads, 10 calls and maybe one close. B2B costs about double. Since platforms limit how many DMs you can send, manual outreach rarely scales past about $100,000 a month.
My first $1M year came from nine Instagram posts. Since then I have spent about $30M on paid traffic to produce $115M in sales.
Qualify before you get on the phone
Send an application before every call. Ask three things: Can they move forward right away? Do they need a spouse’s permission? Can they invest?
If the answers are no, do not take the call. If an application looks shaky, follow up to clarify, and politely cancel if it still does not qualify.
One client, Katie, was doing $60,000 a month. She cancelled about 30% of her calls as unqualified and made $120,000 the next month on the same call volume.
The sales call that ties it together
- Intro and pre frame. Explain how the call will go.
- Discovery. Ask questions that show you care, like a doctor diagnosing something serious.
- Summarize. Repeat back their goal and struggle and confirm you can help.
- Three pillars. Three things you do differently and better.
- Brief overview. Five minutes or less.
- Create certainty. Get them as close to 100% sure as possible.
- Close.
The takeaway
Fix your mindset, find the skill you already have, build and grade the offer, drive traffic you can measure, qualify hard and close cleanly. Follow that sequence and a seven figure year is a realistic target, not a fantasy.
