Why Distraction Is Killing Your Business Growth

A lot of business owners think they have a marketing problem when what they really have is a clarity problem.

Bryan Ostermiller has spent more than a decade in high ticket sales. He started his first business at 20 and was running a large company by 24. He built and coached sales teams for years. Today he coaches high performers on getting more out of themselves.

He came on the Infinite Income Podcast and the conversation went deeper than I expected. Here is what stood out.

Driving yourself with force eventually breaks you

Bryan described his early leadership style as harsh. He yelled at the people around him and he yelled at himself. It worked for a while. Then it led to burnout, depression and anxiety.

After the burnout, he said the enjoyment just disappeared. He took a step back in 2024 and recalibrated. Meditation, therapy and a lot of self inquiry changed how he works. He described the shift as going from running a car on gas to running it on water.

The big realization was about his real strength. It was never sales itself. It was pulling performance out of people. That is what he does now, and his coaching has been running on referrals for about two years.

The brothers who thought they ran out of market

Bryan told a story about three brothers running a healthcare coaching business in France. They believed they had run out of total addressable market. The business had hit a wall.

Bryan questioned that first. They had not tested a new ad in three months. That is not a market problem. That is a testing problem.

Then he found the deeper issue. They did not actually know if they wanted to grow the business at all. When the people running a company are not sure they want it to grow, it does not grow.

So he started with vision. They rebuilt what they wanted, reworked their marketing and sales, and rebuilt their challenge funnel. Their first challenge after that was a big jump from where they had been.

Vision first, then integration, then tactics

That story shows Bryan’s process. It runs in three steps.

First, build a clear vision of the life you actually want. Not the one you think you are supposed to want.

Second, work on integration. How do your health, relationships and business fit together?

Third, figure out the tactical action steps.

Most people start at step three. They want the ad strategy, the script, the funnel. But if the vision is unclear, the tactics never get full effort behind them. You end up distracted, chasing everything, finishing nothing.

Integration beats balance

Bryan does not believe in balance. He thinks it is a broken idea. He prefers integration.

Instead of splitting your life into separate buckets that compete for time, you look at life in seasons and make the areas work together. Some seasons the business gets more. Some seasons your family or your health does. The goal is that they support each other instead of fighting each other.

He focuses on three pillars: fitness, business and relationships. He said he is hitting all three at the same time for the first time in his life.

What is actually driving you

Bryan referenced David Hawkins and his map of consciousness. The idea is a scale of what drives you, from love at the top down to shame at the bottom. Bryan’s point is that higher states create motivation that lasts. Anger and fear can get you moving, but they burn you out.

He said fear and pride shrink your thinking. With the French brothers, fear of losing everything and comparing themselves to friends were holding them back.

His suggestion is simple self inquiry. Ask what emotion is behind what you are doing. Are you doing this because you want to, or because you are trying to make your dad proud? The honest answer changes what you do next.

Work with people who are already close

Bryan also shared how he picks who to coach. He would rather help someone who is already at an 8 or a 9 get to a 9 than try to drag someone up from a low level. He compared it to drafting the best player first.

That is a useful filter for any coaching or consulting business. Your results depend a lot on who you let in.

Bryan runs one to one and group coaching. His group community, Sales Generators, costs $77 a month, and you can find him on Instagram.

My takeaway

I love podcasting because it gets me in a room with people at a higher level, and this one made me think.

Distraction usually is not about your phone. It is about not knowing what you actually want. When the vision is fuzzy, you jump between tactics and nothing gets full effort. Get clear on the life you want, make the parts of your life work together, and then go execute. And pay attention to what is driving you. Fear will get you started. It will not get you to the finish line.

So before you change your ads or your offer, ask yourself the question Bryan asked those brothers. Do you actually want this to grow? If the answer is yes, everything else gets easier.
