I made my first million at 27. Since then my companies have generated over $111M in roughly four to six years.
But my first two years without mentors produced about $2,000 in revenue. So I know exactly what the slow way looks like, and I know what I would do differently.
If I had to start from zero today and hit $1M in 12 months, this is the eight step playbook I would follow, month by month.
Month 1: Learn a high income skill
You get paid for the value you bring, not for what you think you deserve. So the first job is to become valuable. These are the five skills I would pick from:
- Sales. The most important skill in business. Door to door is the best training ground because it is commission only, so companies will take beginners.
- Media buying. Running paid ads on Facebook and Instagram. Most owners can’t do it themselves, and it supports big retainers.
- Technical support. Connecting tools like ClickFunnels, GoHighLevel, ActiveCampaign and PhoneBurner.
- Operations management. Keeping a visionary CEO’s projects on schedule.
- Copywriting. Emails, sales pages and posts that make people act.
I knocked over 27,000 doors in nine months in Alabama selling security alarms, 12 hours a day, six days a week. I had a gun and a knife pulled on me. It was draining, but it made me.
Before that, my mentor David Fry had me working out of his home office learning copywriting, media buying, project management and tech. Add sales on top and you can make money fast.
If you have a day job, study after work. Udemy is cheap, Alison is free, and Elite University gives you training, accountability and software for $97 a month.
Month 2: Learn, don’t earn
Most people aren’t ready to sell yet. So do free work for friends, family and people in your network. The goal is skill and proof, with pay as a bonus.
- Deliver fast. Speed of delivery drives satisfaction.
- Do the work before you ask. “Can I edit your videos?” gets ignored. A finished sample gets attention.
- Get a testimonial as soon as the work is done.
- Ask for referrals. Referred leads already trust you.
- Collect feedback and keep improving.
Month 3: Get your first paying client
My first paid client was Gary. He messaged me after seeing my fitness results on social media and bought a four month program for $2,000.
I was nervous and botched parts of that call. Didn’t matter. That one sale gave me confidence, and Gary renewed for another four months.
Once you have a client, raise lifetime value with add ons or upgrades. Paying clients also pay more attention and give you faster feedback than free ones. Reinvest the profit into getting more customers.
Month 4: Build your marketing pipeline
Most businesses fail because nobody knows they exist. Here are six ways to get in front of people:
- Content that teaches and shows expertise.
- Paid media. Fast but expensive. I have spent over $30M on ads, and beginners can’t afford many mistakes.
- Partnerships with people who have your audience, usually on a revenue share.
- Podcasts where you explain how you help people.
- Organic outreach. Free DMs through Instagram hashtags and Facebook groups. High volume, but it got me my early clients.
- Shoutouts from theme pages in your niche.
Go where people already have the audience you want and where buyers can pay easily.
Month 5: Do consistent outreach
Beginners build websites, products and SOPs before they have made a sale. Wrong order. Sales first.
Commit to 100 outreach messages a day. That is about 3,000 a month through Facebook groups, Instagram hashtags, TikTok or whatever audience you already have. Put the cash it produces into ads, materials or your first hire.
Month 6: Master sales
Businesses don’t die from bad service, a weak team or mistakes. They die when the sales stop. Learn sales at all costs.
Months 7 to 11: Hire five positions
Now you buy back your time. My rule: when one task takes over your whole schedule, hire it out.
- Fulfillment rep (month 7). Onboards clients, delivers the service and handles billing, so you stay on sales.
- Setter (month 8). Sends 100+ messages a day, answers inbound and books calls. A setter can give you back up to eight hours a day. A client of mine, Alex, was doing $20,000+ a month through outreach. He burned out, stopped messaging, and revenue dropped.
- Coach or mentor (month 9). I have reinvested about $3M into mentors. Find someone doing what you want and pay for it. Search your exact problem and industry on YouTube to find them.
- Sales rep (month 10). I hired my brother Gentry with zero sales experience. Recorded calls, a script and live sessions got him competent in about three months. With a setter, fulfillment rep and sales rep, the business can run while you are on vacation.
- COO (month 11). Runs meetings, systems and projects so you can focus on strategy. I am a control freak, and I learned the hard way: if you don’t delegate, you are the bottleneck.
Month 12: Build your personal brand
My biggest regret is ignoring my brand because paid media worked so well. A bigger brand means more organic sales and easier closes because the trust is already built.
Don’t try to be everywhere. Focus on YouTube. Videos there get views for years, while a Facebook or Instagram post is mostly dead after about three days. Cut your YouTube videos into clips for the other platforms.
The takeaway
The order matters more than anything. Skill, proof, a first client, a pipeline, daily outreach, sales mastery, then hires and brand.
Most people try to do month 12 in month 1. Do the boring steps in order and the year takes care of itself.
